The official name for Sri Lanka is 'The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka' and it is often known as 'The Pearl of the Indian Ocean'. The official languages of the country are Sinhala and Tamil, but worry not! English is widely spoken in the country. Sri Lanka gained its independence from United Kingdom in 1948 (earlier than Malaysia!) and it became a republic in 1972. It was known as Ceylon before that.
The country practices Democratic Government, with an Executive President and a Parliament elected by the people. Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) became the first female prime minister of the world in 1960. The national flag, which is the Lion Flag, is considered to be one of the oldest flags in the world.
The currency of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee, let's try converting.. for now, a hundred Malaysia Ringgit, we can get around 4,179.13 LKR.. As on beliefs, majority of the population follows Buddhism, followed by Hinduism, Christianity and Islam.

The nation has a National Tree, which is the 'Na Tree' botanically known as 'Mesua Nagassarium'. In Malaysia, we have a National Flower which is the red Hibiscus Rosa Sinensis.. as for Sri Lanka, their National Flower is 'Nil Mahanel' botanically known as 'Nympheae Stelatta', interesting isn't it?
The highest point in Sri Lanka is Pidurutalagala or Mount Pedro in English which stands at 2, 524 m. It is half of Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia. Pidurutalagala is located near to the city of Nuwara Eliya and it is easily visible from most area of Central Province.
Sri Lanka is among the leading exporters of tea in the world. It is of high importance for the Sri Lankan economy and the world market as it is the world's fourth largest producer of tea.
Today, it boasts of being a modern industrial economy that has one of the highest per capita incomes in South Asia. Apart from it, Sri Lanka is now a famous tourist destination that is known worldwide. This is mainly owing to its natural splendor, in the form of tropical forests, picturesque beaches and mesmerizing scenery.
